I had a request to do a tutorial on the pen tool in Photoshop. For photographers, the best use of the pen tool is to create detailed selections. Of course, that’s just my opinion. If you’re a photographer that designs album pages, your own marketing designs, etc., the pen tool can be of greater use than just making selections.
This tutorial gives just a quick basis and overview of the pen tool and will hopefully give you enough understanding that you’ll be willing to delve in and start practicing yourself. The pen tool definitely needs practice, but once you get a handle on it, you’ll find that it’s a very easy and effective tool to use in your Photoshop arsenal.
And on a quick note, I’ve still got some practicing to do when it comes to creating and producing tutorial videos. Hopefully it’s not too apparent, but I’ll get better. Enjoy.

Dang you’re good. Right from the gitgo when you defined the pen tool as really being the Path tool my understanding of it changed. I’ve never seen the pen tool used in abstract on a white background before. I’ve only see gurus quickly manipulate it like it was some mysterious trick that only a genius could do. Thanks so much for this very clear tut. I’m inspired to practice it now because I really can see what a benefit it could be in so many circumstances.
Thanks, Ricky! That was a great tutorial!!
Thanks Iris and Gillian! It’s much appreciated.
Thanks so much for doing this!!
It has helped me understand the pen tool so much more!
